The Gorge is one of the most beautiful sailing venues in the world, and definitely makes our list of top 5 most epic adventure spots for many reasons. This is not just a regatta and clinic opportunity, but a full on adventure, so be sure to plan ahead to take advantage of the awesome natural activities all over the Gorge!
Cascade Locks
Portland (PDX airport) is about an hour from the regatta venue in the "town" of Cascade Locks. While the town has a hotel, a pizza place, and a soft-serve ice cream shop - the essentials - there isn't much else except for birds and trees within 20 miles, so having a car is definitely makes everything a lot easier, and stocking up on food before you leave Portland is a good idea. The city of Hood River is about a 20 minute drive upstream from Cascade Locks, and is the main hub for kiteboarding, windsurfing, and beer brewing (see Full Sail Brewery) in the area. If you need groceries or sail repair parts once you get to the venue, this is your best bet.
Lodging
The local sailing club, CGRA has a list of nearby hotels here, but for the authentic Gorge experience, come camp with us! The campground is literally on the water, across the park from the sailing club, and the after sailing soccer and camp stove cooking makes for some awesome fleet bonding.
Weather And Activities
The "loc's only" weather site for the gorge is www.TheGorgeIsMyGym.com and provides forecasts for sailing, kiting, skiing (at the nearby, Mt. Hood), mountain biking and more.
